⛏️ [Seeking Flavors of the Past] The Iron Ore Era: Ma On Shan Mining Village Journey
Description
This time, in partnership with Grace Community Gala / ELCHK Mine Village Heritage Campaign (鞍山探索館), we serve up a flavor rich in history: ⛏️ The Iron Ore Flavor.
Beyond the bustling shopping malls and public housing estates of modern Ma On Shan lies a mountain town history written by iron mining. We pass Ma On Shan Station, Heng On Estate, and Yiu On Estate daily, but rarely pause to uncover how miners and their families built their lives on this land.
Ma On Shan once flourished because of its iron ore. High up on the hillsides, miners and their families created a community—building churches, dormitories, and mining facilities that wove together a vital, yet often forgotten, chapter of Hong Kong's industrial past. As new town development took off with the construction of Heng On and Yiu On Estates, those mining years gradually faded behind high-rise towers.
Starting at Ma On Shan Park, this guided tour uncovers surviving iron mining relics, shedding light on miners' daily lives, family connections, and the district's urban evolution.
